Virgil Van Dijk come through the academy at FC Groningen and the coaches there had no doubts that there was a special player in their ranks. He signed for Celtic in 2013 for around 2.6 million and made a big impression at Celtic Park immediately becoming their stalwart, leading center-half however a lack of attacking quality ensured they never went far in Europe.

A move to Southampton brought more acclaim to his name and tested his abilities against the tough and physical Premier League. He was a part of some good sides but they we’re still rebounding from the losses of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Rickie Lambert and the core that made people think the saints had a bright future in the league. Because of this that team never really ventured above a top ten finish.

A world-record move to Liverpool made him the most expensive center-back in the world at £75 million! He made an immediate impact at Anfield plugging a gap that had needed to be plugged for years, he scored his first goal in his first game with a late header against rivals Everton in a 2-1 victory. He has developed into one of the best players in the world at Liverpool and was nominated for the Ballon D’or in 2019.
